Jeffrey Byrd won the Alabama Scholastic Chess Championship Open Division on Sunday, 4/26/09, in Montgomery, Alabama. There were 12 people in his division and Jeffrey went undefeated in the four rounds that he played. He was awarded a trophy (see below) plus $1,000 in grant money. He will represent Alabama in the Denker Tournament of High School Champions where the winner will receive a free four year scholarship to the University of Texas in Dallas. The Denker Tournament will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana in August. Congratulations Jeffrey on a job well done!!
